If a holiday in the state of Quintana Roo only brings images of Cancun's crowded beaches and spring breakers exploring their wild side, you could not be more wrong.

Nestled some 60 miles from Cancun's busy shores is the small beach town of Akumal Mexico and a vacation to this more sedate Mexican beach destination is one that will take you to a reasonably laid-back Caribbean holiday.

An Akumal Mexico vacation easily appeals to those who would like to have a vacation that includes activities such as

  • snorkeling
  • sunbathing on uncrowded beaches
  • snorkeling
  • sunbathing
  • and more snorkeling

Akumal is also an ideal place if you want to explore other tourist spots in the area such as Xel-ha and Tulum.

Akumal Mexico Vacations – Need To Know

Distance From Cancun:

If you plan to spend your vacation in Akumal, you will most likely arrive by plane at the Cancun Airport. From Cancun, it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to get to Akumal. (note: remember, there is no akumal airport. So prepare for that 1 hour journey from Cancun)

You can travel by taxi, car rental or by hiring a shuttle from the hotel you're staying in. Paying for a shuttle bus from the hotel should be the most hassle-free option but if you prefer to experience driving Mexican highways (which is not always an easy feat by the way), you can easily rent a car at the airport.

Of course, if you also plan to visit other tourist spots near Akumal during your stay, a car rental is a cost-effective way to do it.
