Unique And Fantastic Greek Island Vacation Ideas

Alonissos

If you’re the kind of person who longs for a fantastic Greek island vacation in “the real Greece,” take yourself to Alonissus and you’ll find a Greek island without the claws of commercialism.

A haven for nature lovers and walkers, Alonissus is the perfect place for quiet holidays where you can just relax and enjoy the slow tranquil pace of rural life. Should you wish to venture out and explore the area, there are many opportunities for walking in evergreen environment, for exploring the village, and for beach related activities.

Fantastic Island Vacations Suggestions:

1) It is easy to go for a walk around the island. Walkers routes are perfectly signposted.

2) You don’t wanna miss the ancient capital, Hora. Set in a perfect location on top of a hill, walking along its narrow roads pass tavernas and shops is an experience you will treasure. Also offers great views so don’t forget your camera.

3) Explore the caves and beaches of the marine park and appreciate the rich marine ecosystem.

4) Visit other smaller more deserted islands nearby.

5) And of course, spend a day/days at the beach. Alonissus has very safe, clean, and above all, pristine swimming beaches.

Aegina

For some of us, a fantastic Greek island vacation brings images of a holiday back in ancient Greece. We long to walk the same roads great thinkers once walked on, we long to see places which were once the world’s bastion of power, we long to see for ourselves the architectural wonders that have influenced our wold today.

Many of Greece’s islands will surely take you to that time and place. But one of the most amazing islands that you should visit is Aegina – a haven of archaeological sites! Plus it has the added bonus of being only 30 minutes away from the capital, Athens (By Flying Dolphin!)

Aegina is actually a popular holiday destination even among the locals. So don’t expect it to be the place for secluded vacations. That said though, Aegina has retained its “Greekness,” despite it being a tourist hub.

Aegina is also a good holiday base if you want see and experience the beauty of Athens without actually staying there during your holidays. Aside from being a trove of architectural and historical wonders, it also has a busy nightlife and some special places to stay in.

The beaches are not amazingly great on the island but if you really must go and get to one, it is very easy to visit one of the smaller islands nearby for that amazing beach experience in Greece.

Kefalonia/Cephalonia

Does a fantastic Greek island to you include images of the place where Penelope Cruz & Nicholas Cage found love in the movie, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin? Well, that’s Kefalonia, the biggest island in Greece’s Ionian Islands.

But even without Hollywood making its mark on the island, Kefalonia is a beauty in itself. Blessed with breathtaking beaches and a mountainous interior, this is an island to behold.

Kefalonia is not the island for those who want to see the more “historical” part of Greece. But it is a real haven for nature lovers where there are many avenues for nature related activities to fill any holiday in the Greek islands.

Go to Cephalonia if you want Greek Island holidays

  • where you can walk up a mountain that’s more than 1500 meters above sea level (Mt. Enos)
  • if you love walking amidst rugged countryside full of lush plants and trees
  • if you don’t mind venturing into some very interesting caves
  • if you’ll do anything for breathtaking picture perfect views
  • if you love pristine unspoilt beaches
