Planning a Deep Sea Fishing Trip to Mexico

There are few things as exciting as spending the day on the deck of a boat, watching the waves and then hauling a big fish into the boat. If you like deep sea fishing, you probably already know that Mexico is a wonderful vacation destination. There, you can fish in a variety of waters, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean and from the Caribbean Sea to the Bay of Baja.

The easiest way to book a deep sea fishing trip in Mexico is through a charter fishing company. Most of these businesses offer a number of packages and opportunities, including deep sea fishing, snorkeling and more. In addition, most of these businesses can provide you with tackle if you don't have your own . or if you don't want to take it on a plane . and supply meals, life vests and more. Check with your charter before your trip to find out exactly what to bring with you and what they'll provide. Always provide your own sunscreen and use a higher SPF in a waterproof formula, reapplying often to avoid sunburn.

However, when planning your trip, you need to know that charters offer a variety of different experiences appropriate for novice fisherman, families and for experienced anglers. Depending on your experience level, you'll want to choose the type of charter that's right for you. If at all possible, plan to spend at least two days fishing if you're new to the sport. By the second day, you'll feel much more comfortable and accomplished. In addition, know that most charters practice catch and release on sports fish, and limit the catch of edible fish. This helps preserve the fish populations for the enjoyment of everyone.

If you want to catch tuna or mahi mahi, you might want to start in Baja. Popular destinations in this area include La Paz, Loreto, East Cape, San Jose del Cabo, Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas. Loreto, in particular, is an interesting destination that's rich with cultural history. When you aren't out fishing, you can visit the town's historic missions nestled beside the Sierra La Giganta Mountains. Or, if you like snorkeling as well as fishing, be sure to save some time for Isla Coronado or Isla El Carmen. The waters there are so beautiful and rich with coral and fish that it's easy to see why the Sea of Cortez was one of Jacque Cousteau's favorite places.

Mazatlan, Ixtapa, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta and Huatulco are also popular destinations for Pacific coast fishing. Puerto Vallarta, located in Banderas Bay, is a great place to fish for blue and black marlin, mahi mahi, Pacific sailfish and yellowfin tuna. In addition, the waters off Mazatlan are known for giant black marlin, roosterfish, sailfish, bonefish and tarpon. Group and red snapper can be found in the waters off Acapulco, as can sailfish, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi and black marlin. At Ixtapa, you can fish for Pacific sailfish, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi, blue and black marlin, wahoo, grouper, Spanish mackerel, snapper and yellowtail jacks.

Finally, popular fishing destinations on the Yucatan Peninsula include Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Campeche and the Playa del Carmen. At any of these locations, you can fish for Atlantic sailfish, mahi mahi, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, kingfish and bonito to your heart's content.
